Caterpillar to Butterfly lesson details:

Music & Instrument (enhances language development): This song is called, “Caterpillar” and is sung to the tune of “The Adam’s Family.” We will explore the bells while singing this song. Super Kids (5-7) will be exploring the notes C, D, E, and F to the Caterpillar song. As well as, be introduced to staccato and legato.

Song: Caterpillar

My tummy is fat. (shake, shake)
I like it like that. (shake, shake)
I wiggle around,
I jiggle around,
My tummy is fat. (shake, shake)

I’m a hairy caterpillar
I’m such a chubby feller
I love to eat and eat,
Those leaves are such a treat!

Repeat 1st verse

Creative Movement (exploring concepts and the elements of time, space, and energy through natural body movements): we will be using our minds to decide how to make our bodies small like an egg, low/long like a larva, closed like a chrysalis, and light/open like a butterfly to the beat of the djembe. This is the Sugar Kids (1-3 yr.) time to be exposed to drama as they connect natural body movement to the life cycle of a butterfly. Super Kids will incorporate staccato movements when moving like a caterpillar and legato movements when moving like a butterfly.

Sugar Kids’ Group Activity: The Parachute. They’ll climb under it, climb over it, make it jump, make it sit, make it go in a circle, and pretend it’s a chrysalis.

Creative Drama (exploring concepts through the mind, voice, and body): this week’s creative drama experience is inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will be hiding food throughout the room, and the students (one at a time) will be encouraged to use their bodies to move like a caterpillar to find a piece of food. They will be encouraged to show an emotion once they find their food.

Creative Visual Art (exploring materials to create a visual piece of art): Sugar Kids will be using washable tempera, porcupine rings, and pom poms to creative their masterpieces. Soaring & Super Kids will be using markers, coffee filters, water spray bottles to create a design and see it move after it gets watered down. They will have the option of pinching the middle of the coffee filters with pipe cleaner, creating a butterfly. All visual arts activities focus on the process of discovery, rather than creating a final product. Examples of artwork are not shown, in order to encourage their own creativity.
